I love a well made box just as well as the rest of us. Here is my collected logs on furniture that I've build which I think is worth sharing.

Still probably the most thoroughly 'done' piece of furniture here. Missing: images of rhino/grasshopper 'topology optimization' script used to generate holeyness.

I've done this a few times, these good-boxes. These were a first run, a 'tablesaw only' project (my favourite).

I went at this again in early 2018. The result was medium-good, although I was a little bit unsatisfied with the 1/4" plywood being a bit under-thickness for my taste, and they're really only good for books.

They fit pretty well on a 4x8' sheet though.

And they do the work.

## Shelves in Another Go

New year new kinematic boxes. I have also settled into a new place, so I wanted to outfit the room with plywood.

![shelvesplan2019](units-2019/images/whiteboard.jpg)

Shelves have 'feet' (three only!) on three of six faces. They have flush-mounted hardware on interior faces so that they can be squished together... three feet means they mostly agree on what planar surfaces are w/r/t one another.

I have a 'unit size' defined (9.75"), and can define how many 'units' in each direction I want ...

Here's what the plan is:

I made a test baby:

- last rights:
 - get the rest of the room into rhino
 - then see below, but pretty much ready to rip

- ok,
 - see machining notes below
 - when you unroll, the nicer side *is* on top, so unroll-out not unroll-in ...

 - all things considered, a great box. good work.

- outliers
 - hampers
 - plant table
 - tiny bin
 - coffee tamp bin ? hdpe ?
 - i.e. make a 'unit size' and interior-holes free version ...

## The List of Furniture Desires

- rack / towels - betwixt doors is 65" - do 3dp joints for birch dowels

# Jake's Notes

## Notes on Machining Plywood

This time around I'm using a 1/4" 3-flute compression bit. Tried a 6 flute, found it unsatisfying, this seems a bit better. Would rather have an onsrud than a shopbut, but hey. Safe passes one 1/2" Baltic Birch looks like 2 passes at 9.5kRPM going at 60in/min and 90in/min plunge. Plunge still generates smoke, although I tuned the lead-in and out to exit at a shallower angle - again, this is something of a shopbot limit (having slow accelerations through these arcs). Danger passes are one-shot at 40ipm with a higher spindle speed, sounded like faster spindle is better, but there are some noticable shoddy spots on the latter.
